News - Animal Health Ireland welcomes creation of new animal health body in Northern Ireland

Animal Health Ireland (AHI) very much welcomes moves in Northern Ireland to establish a body with a similar remit to that of Animal Health Ireland. Like AHI, this new body is to be funded through a combination of State and private sector investment. It will address those diseases and conditions of cattle which impact on trade and competitiveness and which are currently not subject to national control programmes, with an initial focus on BVD and Johne’s disease.

AHI is particularly encouraged by the approach being adopted by the Northern Ireland body to BVD eradication, which creates the basis for a coordinated programme to eradicate BVD from the island of Ireland. We look forward to deepening cooperation with colleagues in Northern Ireland on this and other programmes in the future.
